A single heart surgery or cancer treatment in a Mumbai hospital can cost ₹10 to ₹25 lakh. Most family health policies, and most company group covers, are only ₹3 to ₹5 lakh. Buying a much larger base policy is expensive. A super top-up closes that gap at a fraction of the cost.
What is a super top-up?
A super top-up is a health policy that starts paying once your hospital bills in a year cross a fixed amount, called the deductible. You choose the deductible, usually ₹3 lakh, ₹5 lakh or more, to match your existing cover. Because the insurer pays only above that amount, the premium is much lower than for a regular policy with the same cover.
Top-up vs super top-up: the key difference
A normal top-up applies the deductible to each claim. A super top-up applies it to the total bills in the policy year. That makes a big difference when there is more than one hospital stay.
| Example: ₹5 lakh deductible, two stays of ₹4 lakh and ₹3 lakh in one year | Top-up pays | Super top-up pays |
|---|---|---|
| First stay ₹4 lakh (below ₹5 lakh) | ₹0 | ₹0 |
| Second stay ₹3 lakh (total for the year ₹7 lakh) | ₹0 | ₹2,00,000 |
Your base policy (or company cover) pays the first ₹5 lakh, and the super top-up pays the rest.
Who should buy one?
- Salaried people with company cover: keep your group cover as the base and add a super top-up of ₹20 lakh or more.
- Families with a ₹3–5 lakh policy: boost cover to ₹25 lakh, ₹50 lakh or even ₹1 crore without switching policies.
- Senior citizens: a top-up is often the most affordable way to get high cover later in life.
Things to check before buying
- Match the deductible to your base cover, so there is no gap in between.
- Look at waiting periods for pre-existing diseases, and whether an add-on can reduce them.
- Check room-rent limits, restore or reset benefits, and lifelong renewal.
- Some plans let you remove the deductible later and turn the policy into a full base cover.
Premiums for health insurance qualify for a tax deduction under section 80D, as per prevailing tax laws. Insurance is the subject matter of solicitation.
