Every week, families from Mira Road East, Shanti Nagar, Kashimira, Bhayandar East and West ask us the same question: "We want to start a SIP. Where do we begin, and who can we trust?" This guide answers both, in plain language, so you can start with confidence.
What is a SIP, in one minute?
A Systematic Investment Plan (SIP) invests a fixed amount in a mutual fund every month, straight from your bank account. You buy more units when markets are low and fewer when they are high, so your average cost evens out over time. Most importantly, it turns investing into a habit, like an EMI that builds wealth instead of paying off a loan.
Step 1: Complete your KYC
Before your first investment you need a one-time KYC (Know Your Customer). Keep these ready:
- PAN card
- Aadhaar (for address proof and e-sign)
- A cancelled cheque or bank statement
- Mobile number and email linked to you
KYC can be done online in a few minutes. If you prefer, our team in Mira Road East can do it with you at the office.
Step 2: Decide your goal and time frame
A SIP works best when it has a job to do. Common goals we plan for Mira-Bhayandar families:
- Child's education in 10 to 15 years
- Down payment for a flat in 5 to 7 years
- Retirement in 15 to 25 years
- Emergency fund that stays safe and liquid
The goal decides the type of fund. Long goals can use equity funds; short goals and emergency money belong in debt or liquid funds.
Step 3: Choose how much to invest
Many schemes accept SIPs from ₹500 a month. Start with what you can continue comfortably, and increase it every year when your income grows (a "step-up" SIP). Here is what a ₹5,000 monthly SIP could become at an assumed 12% a year:
| Monthly SIP | Period | Invested | Could grow to* |
|---|---|---|---|
| ₹5,000 | 10 years | ₹6,00,000 | ₹11,61,695 |
| ₹5,000 | 20 years | ₹12,00,000 | ₹49,95,740 |
*Illustration only, at an assumed 12% a year compounded monthly. Actual returns can be higher or lower. Notice how doubling the time more than quadruples the value: that is compounding, and why starting early matters.
Step 4: Pick the right funds (not the "top performer" of last year)
Last year's best fund is often not next year's. A sensible portfolio looks at your risk comfort, the fund's consistency over many years, its costs, and how the funds fit together so you do not own the same shares five times. This is where a good distributor earns their place.
7 checks before you choose a mutual fund distributor in Mira Road
- Ask for the ARN. Every mutual fund distributor must have an AMFI Registration Number. Verify it on the AMFI website before you invest. (Ours: ARN-75843, Alok Kumar Sinha.)
- Check how long they have served. Markets go through good and bad years. You want someone who has guided clients through both.
- Look for a local office you can visit. When you need a redemption, a nominee change or a claim, a face-to-face meeting in your own area saves time.
- They ask before they sell. A good distributor asks about your goals, income, existing loans and insurance before suggesting any fund.
- Protection first. They should check that you have health and term insurance before pushing investments. One hospital bill can wipe out years of SIPs.
- No promises of guaranteed returns. Mutual funds are market-linked. Anyone promising fixed high returns is a red flag.
- Regular reviews and a clear app. You should be able to see your full portfolio anytime and get at least a yearly review.
